The Technical Stuff That Is Embedded In Your Blinds
The Nature of Airborne Particulates:
Airborne Particles are measured in microns. One micron is 1/25,400 of an inch and there are 25,400 microns to an inch. Airborne Particles have diameters that range from .001 to 100 microns. Those we see on blinds, furniture or floating in a bright ray of sunlight are approximately 50 microns or larger in size. Individual particles 5 microns in size or smaller cannot be seen by the naked eye. They tend to be perpetually suspended in air and eventually rest on objects. They are capable of being readily inhaled into our lungs with the tendency to stay there. Amazingly, these particles make up 90+ percent of the total number of particles we breathe!
Biological Organisms:
All homes and work environments are alive with biological organisms that humans themselves introduce. Any group of people is accompanied by a predictable array of bacteria and viruses that become airborne and eventually land on surfaces. Bacteria and viruses in homes and work environments are most commonly transmitted by airborne dispersal. Besides causing the common cold, these organisms that become attached and grow on surfaces are the source of tuberculosis, staphylococcus infections, influenza, and many other diseases.
Most of the diseases transmitted among humans can be classified as respiratory infections. It has been estimated that this accounts for one-half of all acute health conditions. Infectious particles form free-floating “droplet nuclei” well within a size range to breathe. Since people cannot be disinfected upon entering a home or building, there is no avoiding this phenomenon other than to properly deep cleaning surfaces.
Dust:
Dust can come from a wide variety of sources and circulate repeatedly and indefinitely in the air. Dust concentrations fall into the 20 to 40 micrograms/cubic meter range. When humans inhale these particles they are deposited on the tracheal and bronchial surfaces. Larger dust particles (5 to 30 microgram size range) collect in the upper respiratory tract and are observed in the pharynx and trachea. It has been estimated that people typically inhale more than 2 heaping tablespoons of dust particulates a day!
Safety:
Pull and tilt cords are dangerous to young children and pets, as they can cause strangulation. The risk can be reduced by keeping the pull cord high-knotted, secure and out of reach of small children and pets. Blinds with wand tilt are safer than blinds with traditional cord tilt. Cord stops, tassels and tie down devices are available from Blind Cleaning Services.
